Island & Mainland Birding
Belize is truly a birder’s paradise. Belize is a small country with a diversity of habitats, making it home to over 560 species of birds. Unusual birds such as the Jabiru Stork (the largest bird in the Western Hemisphere) and rare birds such as the Harpy Eagle make Belize their home. Birding throughout Belize is an experience for any level of birder, from novice to expert.
Belize has savannahs, rainforests, riparian habitats, broadleaf forests, pine forests, ocean coast lines, and many other features that provide diverse habitats. Because Belize is a small country, guests can experience many of these different areas in a short time and the diverse species each habitat is home to.
Another beauty of the sport of birding is that it can be combined with other activities such as canoeing, horseback riding, hiking through jungle trails, or simply sitting on a deck at one of the jungle lodges. Both casual and serious birders will appreciate birding with our excellent guides and having the opportunity to add several endangered or rare species to their life lists.
Ambergris Caye and associated Bird Islands Tour
The Early Morning Bird Tour leaves at 5:30 am/and drops you off at your dock at 9am. This birding experience is to Cayo Pajaros and Cayo Rosario,( two small bird nesting islands in the back). These two islands have multiple names and even the map has two names each. Bird Island AKA Iguano Caye is where all the White Ibis are nesting and the entire island can be considered the source of White Ibis on Ambergris Caye. Cayo Rasorio is sometimes called Guana Caye; Roseate Spoonbills are sharing the two islands for nesting as well as Tricolored Heron White Ibis and Reddish Egret. All these rare species are nesting in Colony on these two small islands packed tight and one might consider the entire island a natural sanctuary dedicated to that one purpose.
