Tikal is the largest excavated site in the American continent. It is Guatemala’s most famous cultural and natural preserve, and is easy to visit from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Tikal possesses a certain magic… Like all puzzles without answers it fascinates everyone and we dare say…

This majestic archaeological gem comprises 222 square miles of jungle all around the ceremonial center. It took the University of Pennsylvania 13 years to uncover about 10 square miles of structures at Tikal. However, much of it is still left to be unearthed. So, do take some advice… Do try to take Tikal in one fabulous day!

There, our guide will give you a tour of the ruins and you’ll have some time to explore. Once you have worked up a healthy appetite, we will head to the Maruba Jungle Spa for an exotic lunch including fish and wild game. After lunch you can take a refreshing dip in their pool or indulge in incredible treatments such as herbal facials and mud baths (for those that wish to be pampered). Then enjoy the swift boat ride back through the river and home to San Pedro.

Includes: Refreshments, Lunch, Departure Fees out of Belize.

This wonderful day begins as we make our way towards the mainland and up the Old Belize River. Once in the river, we serve a light breakfast while you encounter wildlife such as crocodiles, iguanas and howler monkeys. When we reach Manatee Lookout, we board a private bus with your guide, who will take you to Jaguar Paw/Bakabush Park.

At Jaguar Paw/Bakabush Park the guide takes you along a jungle path up to the caves. Then it is time to put on your head lamps and to splash into the cool water in individual inner tubes and float your way through cave systems where the maya people once worshipped among the limestone and crystal formations.

Once back at Jaguar Paw you can change into dry cloths and enjoy lunch. Next it is on to the famous Belize Zoo, not your average zoo and well worth the trip. Finally it’s back to the swift boat for the ride back to San Pedro.

Includes: Breakfast, lunch, beer, sodas, rum punch and snacks. This adventure departs at 7:00 am and returns at approximately 5:30 pm

Note: this trip can also be done by air, either with either a Horseback riding at Banana Bank Lodge or the Jungle Zip Line adventure, or Xunantunich Ruins instead of the Belize Zoo option.

Flourishing during the Classic Period of Maya civilization, the true ancient name of this site is unknown. “Altun Ha” is a Mayan translation of the nearby village named “Rockstone Pond.” The extent to which the site has been cleared and restored makes it easy to imagine its past glory and wealth as a major ceremonial center. The archaeological site covers about one square mile of area, with at least 500 visible structures. Evidence dates the earliest settlement here to 200 BC, with varied construction phases ending about 900 AD.

History Comes to Life

Lamanai is the Spanish historic name for Lama’ an/ayin, which means “submerged crocodile.” The Royal Ontario Museum directed a archaeological research project at Lamanai between 1974 and 1986 during which over 940 structures were mapped. A long, unbroken sequence of Maya occupation at Lamanai occured through Preclassic and Classic times, beginning by roughly 1500 BC.
