We stayed at Ak'bol over New Years 2011 and *LOVED IT* Absolutely the most relaxing place ever. The staff were wonderful, the food and drinks were outstanding, the accommodations were top notch. We stayed in one of the garden cabanas (still with a view of the sea) and found it heavenly. Yoga under the palapa with Kirsten every morning was more energizing than anything I've ever experienced, and a two hour massage with Milio is something not to be forgotten (you'll need somebody to pour you down the stairs). Ak'bol is conveniently located, quiet, and yet with easy access to town either via water taxi or by foot or bicycle.

Recently stayed at Sunset Beach resort and it was great, Convienent to dive and tours with an amazing reef directly offshore. The tour operators will pick you on the dock directly in front of your condo. So whether you are looking to go out diving or on excursions or just want to lounge around the pool or relax in a hammok on the beach, this is a great place to stay. This was by far the best vacation I have ever taken.

Blue Dolphin is not all it is cracked up to be.
I just got back from a 7 day stay at the Blue Dolphin with 12 other people. Since we had so many people 4 of us stayed at the Lil Dolphin. It is advertised to have all the same amenities. While it does have a full kitchen, the bedrooms were quite a disappointment. At the main house all beds were king sized and 3 of the 4 bedrooms were large with windows on two walls allowing for circulation. This was not the case in the Lil Dolphin. The beds were queen size and only one of the bedrooms had ventilation on 2 walls. The rooms were tiny. The a/c in the main living area was broken, and not scheduled to be fixed or replaced. Another advertised amenity was a washer and dryer. There was only a washer and dryer available in the main house. This meant that when I needed to wash clothes I had to haul them back and forth to the main house, and either stay there or run back and forth to switch loads. I also had to wash all of our bath towels because they were never replaced. Not exactly a "pampered" stay.
Blue Dolphin also advertises that a professional chef is available to cook for $5 a day. The wife of the caretaking couple is this "chef." I wouldn't even describe her as a good cook, much less a chef. Moreover, it doesn't tell you that you need to do the grocery shopping for the meals.

Amenities aside there were a number of safety issues. First and most dangerous is the tile around the pool. The wrong type of tile was used and it was slick when wet. Mark (owner) warned us of this when we arrived. Several of us slipped; fortunately no serious injuries resulted. Also a pool issue, is that the lights in the pool did not work. In the deep end there were "stools" set up so you could sit and look back at the house. At night without lights you could not see them, and anyone jumping in needed to be very cautious. Another pool issue is that it was not cleaned/chlorinated properly. By Thursday the water was green and gross. No one even got in. The last safety issue is also somewhat dangerous. You needed a calling card in order to be able to use the phone. None was provided, and we were not aware of this till we arrived. It would have been nice to be able to call for a taxi, but if one of us had needed emergency help (if, for instance, one of us had slipped on the tile and cracked our head open) there was no way to get it. Indeed, one day a man was walking by on the beach and flashing those of us sitting on the pool deck. There was no one to call to report him.
Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to live on San Pedro and it was actually one of my best joys in life to have a taste of another culture. I am a Tattoo artist and worked for a man who's retirement plan was to eventually move his family to this beautiful island. So at the time all this was taking form for him I was kind of lost in my own life, so I ask if it was possible for me to go and run his tattoo studio in San Pedro. With some thought and discussion from his wife it was decided that I would be the "shop manager" on San Pedro. I wouldn't change my experience one bit. I know the in's and out's of this oasis, from the tourists to the locals, from the lagoon to the reef.....all the way down to even the best and most private spots from North to the South side of the Island. If you have any questions please feel free to email me and I'll be happy to assist you, and if you go smile because everyone else is.
