I hope you're wrong, otherwise it's deja vu all over again. Last time it was Laurie on the SAGA board, now it's Janet on the orphanage board. Get the picture?

No I actually have no idea where you are coming from. I am totally  confused. I just am supporting the drive to raise money for Liberty House and supporting the people who are trying to help.

There is a small crowd of parents of kids at the Island Academy that would like to support this - they also plan to donate gently used clothings, toys, books etc.  Our kids realize just how privileged they are - yes they can act like spoiled brats at times but they are compassionate.  Remember these kids raised $2K for the orphanage just a few weeks ago.  A small community like ours can make a difference.

I believe there is a fundraiser in London soon too - I'll have to check the Liberty foundation website for details.

If people are able to write post paid checks for a year, perhaps having an option of one lump sum might be an idea.  With a lump sum money can be put into a savings account (adds up pretty quickly here.)

I have absolutely no qualms with entrusting Janet Vucinich with money for the orphanage.  She is definitely one of the selfless good guys!

You folks need to open your eyes.

Children from Liberty Orphanage received Christmas cheer with a ‘Fun Day’ aboard the Ryndam cruise ship in Belize City on December 16, 2009. According to Ralph Bladen of the ship ‘MS Ryndam’ they have developed a close relationship with the Liberty Orphanage in Ladyville, thanks to the power of the social networking site Facebook.

“I tracked down Lindsey Smith, who is stationed in Belize with her husband, via Facebook. I suggested to Lindsey that the ship would like to offer the 37 children of the Liberty Orphanage the opportunity to visit the Ryndam for a fun day outing and meet Santa Claus,” Bladen explained.

The crew of the ship formed an orphanage committee and organized the Fun Day for December 16. The evening before the “big day,” event manager Kelly Williams and casino host Alexandra Moisei organized a “Celebrity Blackjack” evening in the casino. Guests were asked to sign up for a nominal entrance fee with all proceeds going to the orphanage. The dealing in the casino was carried out by Captain Vincent Smit, Hotel Manager Douglas Hernandez, Cruise Director Matt Allen and Ralph Bladen. A total of $550 was raised that night.

Santa Claus was David Lilley, Rundam’s human resources manager, and ship guests and crew were invited into the show lounge to see the children receive their presents, and Bladen noted that the expression on the children’s face was priceless.

The crew has extended an invitation to the orphanage to visit them whenever the ship is in Belize. Bladen and his wife Karen and son Ben will be visiting the children on December 30. In other cheerful news Fortis, a subsidiary of Belize Electricity Limited(BEL) has donated $4,000 to the Liberty Foundation.

According to Liberty Foundation Director Delfena Mitchell, the funds will be allotted towards paying staff whose payments where outstanding and also to do repairs to their building. The Liberty Orphanage is currently home to 37 children.

Pay your money directly to the Liberty Foundation if you want to support the orphanage. There is no need to involve any third person.

Other than the subsidiary error (Fortis is the holding company;  BEL the subsidiary) that was an interesting article.  Where from (what publication)?

This is Janet, the one referred to above. To clarify a few facts. I am not collecting money for Liberty Children's Home. Some of us from San Pedro formed Liberty Help and organized the 5K run and the event at Pedro's to raise money for the children at the home. The people of San Pedro's support for these kids has been phenomenal...many thanks to everyone.... A Sponsor the Child Program is being considered but is not set up at this time, to my knowledge. I have been asked to join the Board of Directors and hope to do what i can. These children have been through a lot and deserve all we can do for them; the home is a great place in Ladyville with a beautiful organic garden, farm animals and good caretakers.  However, at this time funds are desperately needed for the basics: salaries, utilities and food. As explained in an article in the newspaper, some of those originally funding the home are unable to continue their support, and Liberty is in the midst of finding new financial resources. I know some places like Las Terazzas have donation container set up to collect money for the orphanage. Who ever is in charge of that did a nice job they used a kids lunch box and made a slot in it and have a sign to go with.
