Haiti - tops list of worlds most corrupt countries This is the nub of it. A few people have become very rich from Haiti, but you can be certain that they won't use any of their ill gotten gains to help. I think I have to agree that this is well-nigh a hopeless situation. Only if the Dominican Republic or maybe Cuba throws open its doors will mass starvation and deaths from exposure be reduced. And I don't see either happening.

You're right. And of course disease won't be long coming, though fortunately the cold weather will delay that a little.
It's hard to think of anything we can do. There never was much infrastructure there and that has now mostly gone. Airlifts (drops by helicopter in random places around the country) of tents, blankets, food, water and medicines might help.

Since it's my 500th post I'll make it a doosey.
Explain to me how our government can give 100 mil to Haiti when we are so far in debt most peoples grandchildren will not see the end of it. Does everyone realize to give Haiti 100 mil we have to borrow it? Does anyone remember Clinton gave Haiti 4 bil? Was there any accountability of it? No. Do you realize what 100 mil could do for people here in the US? Before you blast me, realize I am a believer in living within your means. I donate $, I give my time, I give my services, but I give where I know it is being spent wisely and with accountability. Not where some corrupt govrn. will take it away, charge the people for it or sell it to other countries.
I am sick of commercials asking me to text or call, I am sick of specials where celebs pretend they are doing something other than promoting themselves, and I am sick of the attempted guilt induced messages implying if I do not give I am immoral. Instead of offerring 100 mil on behalf of the US people, Obama should have opened a hotline and asked citizens how much they wanted to give. Think it would have reached 100 mil? Hell no.
Phew - I feel better, got that off my chest.

2 months later all is back to normal in Haiti. People being kidnapped, tortured, sexually assaulted and murdered. This includes Americans and other nationalities who are there to help. Travel restrictions going back into place. The US governemnt has again warned against any travel to Haiti, you know just like before the quake.
Notice how the media and the government have pushed the whole mess quietly out the back door. Think we will EVER get an accounting of the 100 mil plus we have sent. HELL NO! Typical American response to a natural disaster, rush in and give what we do not have to get a few days of positive press coverage. Meanwhile back at the farm we have children without immunizations, veterans living in poverty, single mothers without food for their kids....where's the left complaining of irresponsible government spending? Or was it just irresponsible when it was a Republican President?

Not to mention the cost of sending in a full division, a naval task force with a hospital ship, and the coast guard. Probably somewhere between 10 and 20 million dollars. Additionally we have volunteered to provide whatever aid is asked for by Chile. All of this while people lose their jobs and homes in America.
Charity begins at home!

Admirably, Chile has refused foreign aid, citing they surveyed the damages and concluded they can handle the situation.
