When Americans speak of a person "graduating" with no further clarification, what exactly do they mean? And do Canadians mean the same thing? I suspect the meaning in Britain is not the same.

Usually refers to someone completeing their course of studies, ie High School, Colledge, University.

I didn't want to pre-judge the answers people gave, but in Britain it is reserved for people leaving a university with (normally) a bachelor's degree. It is NEVER used for high school or any other sort of sub-university education.

 A "graduate" is the holder of an academic degree or diploma (straight out of the dictionary!).

I guess in Britain if you are finished high school you would matriculate on to colledge or university.
