Governor signed it.  It takes effect 90 days after the end of legislative session, around July 1.
At least Arizona is stirring it up.  The Feds are never going to do anything, no matter which Party is in power.

"Arizona has about 460,000 undocumented immigrants, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Currently, immigration offenses are violations of federal law, something most local law-enforcement agencies cannot enforce."

Never fear everybody will sue:
"The American Civil Liberties Union and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, a civil-rights group, promised to fight implementation of the law by challenging its constitutionality. But the ACLU said the timing and strategy have to be worked out.

"We are definitely planning on filing a lawsuit," said Alessandra Soler Meetze, the group's Arizona executive director. "This is a direct attempt by Arizona to regulate immigration laws. And it's forbidden by the federal government."

Now let me get this straight.  As an employer I am bound by law to turn in anyone who applies for a job that doesn't have proper ID.  It's my bookkeeper's responsibility to send the SSN into the State to verify.  So I have the obligation as a citizen to turn individuals over to the border patrol....but policemen in Arizona don't?

My only fear is that they're going to leave the state in droves....look out Cali and Nevada!

Yep and that goes for police in every STATE!  They cannot arrest an illegal for just be here illegally, they have to be involved, or suspected, in a crime.

If you consider attempting to gain employment in the States without being a citizen "breaking the law"..then that premise is correct.  To exlude the police from enforcing the law is the real issue.

Isn't that a crime in its own right?

No, it is a direct attempt by Arizona to enforce immigration laws which the Federal government will not!

Lindsey Graham seems to think cap and trade is more important than immigration.  Screw cap and trade. Let's get to the issues important to Americans, not politicians.

San Francisco city counsel is calling for a boycott of Arizona and demonstrations are being planned in different cities in California, to teach us a lesson.  Finally, far left Cali’s won’t be coming to AZ.  Little did they know that is the real intent of the law!!!!!!

Well, SF and the Bay Area are very liberal, so not surprising.....As a red fish swimming in a blue sea here in California, I think Arizona's got it right.

I haven't been to SF in 20 years and I live 100 miles from there.  Besides, I normally have a tan so I'm not pink enough to fit in.

PS I could care less what Mexico thinks about this law.  Try traveling through their country without ID!

Boston's answer to the Arizona Law....  Boy I live amoung some winners... Huh

Reason aplenty to boycott Hub
By Michael Graham  |   Thursday, May 6, 2010  |  http://www.bostonherald.com  |  Op-Ed
The Boston City Council passed its boycott of Arizona last night, and already one Bostonian has pledged not to go anywhere near the Grand Canyon State until they stop enforcing immigration laws:

Aunt Zeituni.

No, she’s content to stay right where she is, in a taxpayer-subsidized apartment, collecting her city check and other benefits while receiving the best medical care in the world for her long list of ailments - all on the taxpayer’s dime. She’s like a welcoming beacon to every illegal immigrant in Arizona. “Come to Boston,” is her message. “I’ve been ordered deported twice - and they still won’t throw me out!”

That’s Boston. We don’t punish immigration law breakers. We embrace them.

Gov. Deval Patrick ended our participation in a federal program that allowed our state police to help enforce immigration laws. Just last week the House shot down Rep. Jeff Perry’s modest request that everyone applying for state benefits prove they’re in the U.S. legally.

And in 2008 the City Council unanimously endorsed the “Welcoming Massachusetts” pledge. Deportations and workplace enforcement, according to the council, “violate civil and human rights of [illegal] immigrants and, therefore, the core value that all people are endowed with unalienable rights.”

In other words, if you can get here, you can stay. While the rest of us pay and pay.

I could recount the body of social science on the impact of illegal immigration, how it costs taxpayers billions of dollars a year while driving down wages for working Americans, etc. But the City Council’s vote was untethered from facts or even basic logic.

On WTKK-FM yesterday, the resolution’s co-sponsor Felix Arroyo Jr. insisted, “Anyone in this country who is breaking the law should be dealt with. But that’s a completely separate issue” from illegal immigration.

So “breaking the law” is bad, but “illegal” is OK. Got it?

Arroyo also said Arizona’s law was offensive because “I want to walk down the street without having to worry about someone stopping me and asking me for papers.”

This merely proves that Arroyo has no idea what the Arizona law he’s boycotting actually does. It applies only in cases when a police officer has made a “lawful stop, detention or arrest.” So unless Arroyo is stumbling drunk down the street or carrying a severed head, he won’t have any problems.

But, once again, who cares about the facts when you’re busy pandering for politics? My question is, who is the City Council pandering to? Poll after poll shows Americans support the Arizona law by a 2-1 margin. Of those who oppose it, a significant number think Arizona isn’t going far enough.

When word of this boycott reaches the rest of the country, who is more likely to lose casual family tourists this summer - the Grand Canyon or the Big Dig? Phoenix or Fenway Park [map]?

There is no evidence that the Arizona law is harming Boston. On the other hand, Boston’s “Welcoming Massachusetts” embrace of illegals costs millions in federal tax dollars, a cost shared by Arizonans.

If anything, they’re the ones who should be boycotting us until we stop encouraging criminal immigrants to cross their border and burden U.S. taxpayers. But Arizonans aren’t as arrogant as our city councilors.

They’re more than happy to take care of their immigration problems while letting us care for Aunt Zeituni.

Well, I leave next week on a long planned trip to San Francisco and Tahoe. I am going to cut short my time in San Francisco and spend more time Yosemite, Napa, and Tahoe in protest.

What I really suggest we all do is boycott the products of companies that are located in the congressional districts of people like Pelosi, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, Debbie Wasserman-Putz and the like. If we could get something like that rolling we could exert some real pressure.

Let's roll!

Arizona State  Senator Sylvia Allen from Tuscon response:
"The  leftist media has distorted what SB 1070 will do. It is not  going
to set up a Nazi Germany. Are you kidding. The ACLU and the  leftist
courts will do everything to protect those who are here  illegally, but
it was an effort to try and stop illegal's from  setting up businesses,
and employment, and receiving state services  and give the ability to
local law enforcement when there is  probable cause like a traffic stop
to determine if they are here  legally. Federal law is very clear if
you are here on a visa you  must have your papers on you at all times.
That is the law. In  Arizona  all you need to show you are a legal
citizen is a driver license,  MVD identification card, Native American
Card, or a Military ID.  This is what you need to vote, get a hunting
license, etc.. So  nothing new has been added to this law. No one is
going to be  stopped walking down the street etc..."

Entire article is really good:

Martin, enjoy your trip.  I live smack in the middle of both Lake Tahoe and Napa Valley, two of my favorite places in the world!
